OpenAI launches ChatGPT Gov for secure AI in US government

OpenAI has launched a dedicated artificial intelligence platform, ChatGPT Gov, designed specifically for the US government. This specialized AI model aims to handle sensitive information in “secure environments,” following growing concerns about AI security and the rise of competitive models, particularly from China. The announcement comes amid heightened global interest in AI capabilities and technological sovereignty, with the Chinese AI model DeepSeek gaining significant traction internationally.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Gov is built on the company’s latest and most advanced model, GPT-4o. The new platform will be available exclusively to federal, state, and local government agencies, enabling them to process non-public, sensitive data with enhanced security and compliance features.

Government employees have already been among the most active users of AI tools like ChatGPT. Since January 2024, more than 90,000 individuals across 3,500 federal, state, and local agencies have submitted over 18 million queries, highlighting the growing reliance on AI for administrative and operational efficiency. With the launch of ChatGPT Gov, OpenAI aims to provide a more secure and compliant AI solution tailored to governmental needs.

“By making our products available to the US government, we aim to ensure AI serves the national interest and the public good, aligned with democratic values, while empowering policymakers to responsibly integrate these capabilities to deliver better services to the American people,” OpenAI stated on January 28.
