Yunus regime pushes Bangladesh to the brink
The transition from Sheikh Hasina’s government brought with it the promise of a revitalized democratic system in Bangladesh. Many hoped that this new chapter under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus and his government would ensure political stability, economic growth, and an improved quality of life for citizens. Unfortunately, the Yunus administration has fallen short of these expectations. Instead of prioritizing the country’s benefit, reports suggest that several key advisers, including Yunus, appear to be focused on personal gains. This self-serving approach has pushed Bangladesh towards a precarious situation—economically, diplomatically, and in terms of law and order—leaving its democratic framework in a fragile state.
The post-Hasina regime came to power with lofty promises of reforms and economic upliftment, aiming to enhance the living standards of all citizens. However, these promises have largely remained unfulfilled. Bangladesh’s economy, which was once seen as a rising star in South Asia, is now in freefall.
Foreign direct investment (FDI), a critical driver of economic growth, has stagnated as investors remain wary of the country’s political instability. Local businessmen are finding it increasingly difficult to operate, citing rampant extortion by political and non-political figures. In private conversations, several business owners have expressed frustration with the current government. Aspiring student leaders, emboldened by their nonpolitical affiliations, have reportedly been demanding ransoms directly from these entrepreneurs.
