German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed hope for an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine by 2025. However, he acknowledged the uncertainty of achieving this timeline, emphasizing that all options, including diplomatic channels, must be explored to bring about peace. His remarks, delivered during a campaign event in Wolfsburg on January 17, highlight Germany’s precarious balancing act as it navigates its role in the Ukraine conflict while managing internal political tensions.

Scholz stressed the importance of preventing the conflict from escalating into a broader war between NATO and Russia. “Every effort is made to ensure that this war… does not become a war between Russia and NATO,” he stated. The German chancellor has consistently advocated for cautious engagement in military support to Ukraine, opposing the provision of long-range missiles that could strike deep into Russian territory. Scholz argued that such measures would not align with Germany’s efforts as a peacekeeper, even as Berlin remains one of Kyiv’s most significant supporters in Europe.

Germany’s contributions to Ukraine include substantial arms supplies and humanitarian aid. However, Scholz clarified that Germany “won’t do everything that anyone suggests.” This measured approach reflects his strategy to avoid provoking Russia while maintaining Germany’s commitments to NATO and European allies.
