Opinion: Forcing unions on foreign firms hurts Canadian jobs
I was catching up on retail-related articles, as I always do, and found a story from the CBC titled “What happens next after union certification at Amazon warehouse in B.C.” The Aug. 10 article discusses how one of Amazon.com Inc.’s (Nasdaq:AMZN) British Columbia warehouses in Delta (formally known as YVR2) has been unionized based on a ruling by the BC Labour Relations Board. Based on the current state of Canada’s economy, should governments force foreign companies to become unionized? I say no. But why not?
I don’t need to tell you that Canada’s GDP is in decline (-1.6 per cent for the second quarter of 2025) and our unemployment rate is at 7.1 per cent, a high not seen since the pandemic. We are in the middle of not only a trade war with our largest trading partner, but pivoting economically as trade lines are being redrawn........
