With the FIFA World Cup 2026 ready to kick off in cities across Canada, Mexico and the U.S., employers can foster a positive workplace culture by hosting fun events in the workplace and providing flexibility during the event, says Cissy Pau, principal consultant at Clear HR Consulting.

“[The World Cup] is a great way to build positivity if people get into the spirit of the competition. It’s also a good way to help [foster social connection], to see people as more than just a co-worker. That social piece and getting to know one another as individuals and human beings is important and I see it’s getting lost a bit as people work remotely and there are fewer [opportunities for] connection.”

Pau notes fun workplace competitions related to soccer, having lunchtime viewing parties or bringing in lunch related to the culture of the teams that are playing are great ways to encourage social connection, as well as incorporate the diversity of the global matches.
