The renewed controversy over the United Kingdom’s Falkland Islands territory is a tempest in a teapot. The Falkland Islands are well-defended, and President Donald Trump is highly unlikely to remove U.S. recognition of the U.K.’s sovereignty over them. In addition, while Argentina senses an opportunity to bolster its claims over the Islands, its means of action remain limited to rhetoric.

Located 325 miles east of Argentina in the South Atlantic Ocean, the Falklands have been under British control since 1833. Forcibly seized by Argentine forces in 1982, the islands were then liberated by U.K. forces in a 10-week war. When last asked whether they wanted to remain part of the U.K., 99.8% of island voters chose the affirmative.
