On Aug. 1, 2024, I signed my father’s DNR at 34 years old. I watched as he took his last breath, 5:10 p.m., after being struck by an SUV on a notoriously dangerous road in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.

The road failed him. The road failed the elderly driver. The road failed both our families, and it continues to fail countless others.

In 2024, 7,080 pedestrians were struck and killed — the highest number on record since 1982, outside of the pandemic-era spike.

Roads don’t discriminate.
