Our recent report on the distressing state of childhood poverty in Wales has sparked a wave of empathy among Wales Online readers. We reported that children were arriving at school hungry each morning because their families are unable to afford food.

On a visit to Ferndale, we found there is even a small group who don’t have beds to sleep on. The former mining village has the most deprived school community in Rhondda Cynon Taf with some 37% of its pupils eligible for free school meals.
