On October 7, the New York City landmark Strand Bookstore hosted an extraordinary conversation between the iconic, enormously influential Alice Cooper and Grammy-winning writer Anthony DeCurtis to celebrate the former’s latest literary feat, Devil on My Shoulder: A Memoir. Digital, physical, and audiobook copies of this definitive autobiography of “The Godfather of Shock Rock,” co-authored by Daniel Richler, were unleashed the day prior by Da Capo (of Hachette Book Group), which recently published (Cooper’s godson) Dave Mustaine’s In My Darkest Hour: A Memoir, for which the Strand organized an amazing event last month at the Kaufman Music Center.
In New York, Cooper coincidentally ran into his friend, actor Michael Douglas, whose memoir was also released through Hachette that same day, and he stopped by Barnes & Noble to meet and pose with readers before heading to the Strand. Cooper will embark on what will surely be an unforgettable UK book tour, but the Strand always guarantees the best experiences.
Although the Strand has multiple locations, their evening with Mr. Cooper and Mr. DeCurtis took place on the charming sixth floor of their 828 Broadway shop, an East Village staple, which has served as the family business’ home base since 1957. The store has hosted talks with countless other heavyweights, including Nick Cave and Guns N’ Roses pioneer Duff McKagan. However, an extra-special energy preceded and accompanied Alice Cooper.
Two hours before the celebrity conversation, the line stretched down the block—Cooper would later point out some of his die-hard followers from his seat. Once inside, fans could pick up their thick, signed hardbacks. Looking around, one could spot more than one painted face, accessories like top hats, and other nods to Cooper’s aesthetics.
Remarkably, Cooper’s original bassist, Dennis Dunway, who launched his memoir at the Strand in 2015, was among those who turned up to show support.
