These races won't just flip the Senate. They'll be historic 'firsts'
The 2026 midterm elections are turning out to be historically significant beyond the broader implications for the rest of President Donald Trump’s second term. From Alaska to Georgia, there are multiple races where candidates could make history at the state and national levels.
We’re seeing a record number of women candidates running for state legislature. Eight Black candidates are vying to become governors, another historic number. At every level of government, there are at least 355 Native American or Indigenous candidates running for office – another record breaker. And 1 in 3 candidates this cycle is Gen Z or a millennial.
As a country, we are just 60 years out from the massive cultural shifts of the 1960s that were supposed to lead to a more equitable country. In some respects, it’s shocking that we’re still seeing so many “firsts” happen, and that some might not happen at all, depending on what happens on Nov. 3.
