Vice President J.D. Vance and Mehmet Oz, the head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, jointly announced on Tuesday a plan by the Trump administration to cancel coverage for hundreds of thousands of individuals and families currently enrolled in insurance exchanges within the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The administration will cancel around 315,000 ACA health plans, which provide health insurance coverage for approximately 760,000 people in the U.S. Both Vance and Oz allege that the plan targets people whose applications neglected to include required information on their applications. Some enrollees may have been added to the ACA — sometimes known as Obamacare — without their knowledge, the pair also alleged.

Yet, many people may face removal simply because their insurance brokers, who helped them enroll, mistakenly did not place their Social Security numbers on submitted documents when they applied.

In response to that action, Vance and Oz announced that over 500 brokers have been warned they could be blocked from taking part in enrolling future participants. CMS also announced a moratorium on new brokers helping people to enroll.

“A blanket moratorium on new agent and broker registrations would punish legitimate professionals instead of targeting the bad actors responsible for fraud,” said Mychal Walker, president of the National Association of Benefits ​and Insurance Professionals.
