According to Motor Illustrated, using the latest data available from the third quarter of 2025, EV sales accounted for a mere 5.5% of the Canadian market and plug-in hybrids 3.8%.

So far, the only reliable way to get Canadian drivers to buy unpopular electric vehicles has been to have all taxpayers subsidize them — to the tune of over $6.3 billion to date in federal and provincial grants.

If a report by CBC on Wednesday is accurate, the Liberals are about to add to that total by reviving the federal EV subsidy program, which in its previous iteration paid car buyers up to $5,000 towards the cost of an EV.

The federal government suspended that program a year ago when it ran out of money after shelling out $3 billion.
