Commentary: To get every New Yorker counted in the next census, we need to start now

Eighty-nine people. That was the margin by which New York lost a congressional seat in the last census count in 2020. This was the slimmest margin by which a state has ever come up short of retaining a seat — roughly the number of riders in a typical subway car.

The effects can be felt by all New Yorkers. Census counts determine congressional representation and impact federal funding formulas. If New Yorkers are going to get the resources they need, we need to act now in preparation for the next census in 2030.

New York has lost representation in Congress in every census since 1950. Many are projecting that we will lose an additional two seats........
