A one-digit mistake by private sector pension plan administrators caused “thousands” of senior citizens to be put on notice by the Canadian Dental Plan, including myself.

Basically, a code on T4-A slips from the private company was incorrectly entered. It indicated private dental insurance was available when, in fact, it was not. It had been turned down upon retirement because of cost.

I was informed I would be removed from the government plan. Also, I would have to refund all benefits received the previous year. I was given roughly one month to respond.

All it took to rectify the situation was five phone calls, three emails and an express post letter.

A call to the dental plan said the ball was in my court. They sent me a form to have the pension company sign and return to me. Then, I would have to send that form to the government.

Initially, the pension company said it was news to them, and they would get back to me. They never did.

In subsequent calls with different operators, I was told that the wrong digit placed in T4-A slips caused “thousands” of mistakes. That meant they could not guarantee a response by the government deadline.

Eventually, I received the signed form. It was close to the deadline, so I mailed it by express post.

Ironically, that cost more than the benefit reimbursed on my next dental appointment.

Consider navigating the maze of government and corporate obstacles a mental exercise for seniors. It will keep you sharp, but, sadly, also frustrated.

I, too, followed the application process, was accepted and received a 60 per cent payment level.

The amount you can claim is allotted in units. I got four, and that covered 60 per cent of two cleanings in one calendar year. The next year, my eligibility amount dropped to 40 per cent, even though my income did not change.
