New Delhi: Delhi advocate Manik Gupta has now approached the Supreme Court, alleging that he was assaulted and abused by the Delhi Police when he visited the Nizamuddin Police Station on Thursday (July 23) for the release of students who were arbitrarily picked up on their way to Jantar Mantar to participate in the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party-led (CJP-led) student protests.

Earlier, Gupta told The Wire that he was slapped, punched and illegally detained by officers at the Nizamuddin Police Station when he went there to help detained students on the intervening night of July 23-24. The police, on the other hand, denied the allegations of assault.

Gupta wrote a complaint to the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), South-East District, on July 24, detailing his account of custodial violence. Gupta told The Wire that he did not receive any reply from the DCP or any other police officer.

In an application filed before the Supreme Court, Gupta urged the top court to order an independent probe into the incident.
