The clock on the microwave clicks over to 2 am. Out in the hallway, a soft, familiar shuffle breaks the silence. The deliberate, measured footsteps of someone navigating a world that has suddenly grown a bit too heavy.
I step out of my room to see my father near the kitchen counter. He is battling cancer, and these days, even the most basic, daily mundane tasks require an exhausting bravery. Tonight, his hands cannot steady the pitcher to pour a glass of water. Without a word, I take the weight from his hands, and finish pouring, offering a gentle smile as I hand the glass back.
Moving back home after all this time has thrown the passage of years into sharp relief, forcing that unspoken geometry of growing up into reality. For the first two decades of our lives, we are held, guided and carried across every threshold by parents who seem invincible. Now the roles have reversed. I am the one checking the locks at night, listening for the soft sounds of distress in the dark, and making sure the medicine box is stocked.
