Mohammad Abbas, the 15-year-old son of Ra’am party chairman Mansour Abbas, was seriously injured Sunday when he was hit by a car while riding an electric bicycle.

The politician’s son was riding in his hometown of Maghar, an Arab city in the Upper Galilee, when a car hit him and threw him from the bike.

Paramedics who handled the accident said they found the boy lying in the middle of the road, conscious but suffering from severe injuries, including to his head. He was taken to the Tzafon Medical Center outside Tiberias for further treatment and then transferred to Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center, which said that he is in stable condition.

Hebrew media reports did not say if the driver of the car was detained by police or give details on the circumstances of the collision.

A statement from Abbas’s office thanked the medical teams and asked “the public to pray for the speedy recovery of Mohammad.”

The statement said that “due to the circumstances, we can’t respond to all the individual inquiries at this time.”

The minimum legal age to ride an electric bicycle or scooter in Israel is 16, and riders must hold a valid driving license or pass a special theory test. Wearing a helmet is compulsory.

Riding an electric two-wheeler without a license can carry a fine of up to NIS 1,000 ($321).

Shortly after the accident in Maghar, a boy, 9, was seriously injured when he was hit by a car as he rode a bicycle in Haifa. He was taken to the hospital with head injuries.
