Checking Into History in the US Capital

For years, Washington, DC had been quietly calling me back. Between my undergraduate and graduate studies, I hitchhiked across America, often relying on overnight Greyhound bus rides. That was the last time I visited the American capital. I was in my twenties. It was 1983. Back then, entering the White House to glimpse Ronald Reagan’s Oval Office required little more than standing in line for an hour. No advance reservations. The security measures of the 1980s seemed strict at the time. Looking back, they now feel remarkably relaxed. How the world has changed.

Yet my return was driven by something else as well: the desire to experience Washington as America prepares tomorrow for one of the most significant celebrations in its history. The city will not simply mark another Fourth of July this weekend. It will become the symbolic stage for a milestone few generations witness – the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Across the capital, the familiar rhythms of Independence Day are set to evolve into a citywide spectacle of history, patriotism, and celebration.

Searching for a hotel worthy of such an occasion, I had only one property in mind: The Watergate Hotel. Few places bring together political history, luxury hospitality, Potomac River views, and enduring Washington intrigue quite like this iconic address.

As a teenager, I admired President Richard Nixon for his support of Israel. Spending three nights at a hotel forever associated with the political drama that ended his presidency felt unexpectedly emotional.

The Watergate name became permanently etched into history after the scandal that ultimately forced Nixon’s resignation in 1974. The story later reached global audiences through the acclaimed film All the President’s Men, winner of four Academy Awards and starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman.
