My introduction to recorded music

Do you by any chance remember vinyl records? Of course you do, especially if you are already in your eighties or approaching them. I was given a few of these, through which I was introduced to famous classical piano works, my mother being a piano teacher who expected me to follow in the footsteps of such keyboard giants as Paderewski, Horowitz and Rubenstein. Unfortunately my appreciation of the music of great performers and composers far outstripped my ability to perform.

My father’s modest collection of vinyl records comprised a few Hebrew melodies, two of which I remember for their stirring lyrics. One was about a group of five Chalutzim who set out to build a settlement in the desert. They are mown down........
