The End of the New York Era
I believe we are witnessing the beginning of the end of the New York era. My fear is not simply about politics or elections. It is about the future of one of the greatest Jewish communities in history. For over two thousand years of Jewish history, our communities have flourished when two conditions existed: relative safety and relative financial prosperity.
The United States became known as the ” Goldene Medina” the Golden Land, for precisely these reasons. For nearly two centuries, America offered Jews something that much of the world could not, the opportunity to build lives, raise families, create businesses, accumulate wealth, and practice Judaism in relative security.
And at the heart of that American story stood New York. New York became the center of Jewish life not by accident, but because it offered those two essential ingredients: safety and opportunity. Generations of Jewish immigrants transformed the city while the city transformed their lives.
