There is a visible frustration watching two advanced militaries hesitate before a single Iranian mountain, asking why they do not simply finish the job. This sentiment, audible in comment threads and op-eds, misreads how modern war works. The age when overwhelming force guaranteed quick victory is gone. Today’s campaigns operate under political, legal, and verification constraints, facing an enemy that buries its high-value assets beneath granite precisely to neutralize technological superiority. Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La is that lesson carved into rock.

The three previous articles of this series The Nuclear Option for Pickaxe Mountain, Destroy Everything Around Pickaxe Mountain. Then Invade, and Demolishing Pickaxe Mountain with a Nuclear Bomb Inside followed the most direct paths to their logical ends. A shallow nuclear strike irradiates access routes and verifies nothing. A theater-wide air campaign followed by an invasion risks breaking a nation’s military capacity to purchase hours inside a mountain, only to breach what might be an empty room. Detonating a nuclear weapon inside the complex guarantees total destruction at the price of regional radiological catastrophe, leaving the site behind lethal contamination that blinds all future inspections. Of the definitive solutions, that last one is the most plausible and damning: it destroys the mountain by making certain no one will ever confirm what it destroyed.

All these paths share a hidden assumption. They take for granted that the objective is to reach the interior and confirm what waits there. There is a fourth option, cheaper than any definitive solution, that abandons the ambition to see inside and settles for something more cunning.

It does not aim to destroy the mountain; it aims to make the mountain talk. Collapse the entrances. Then observe what the regime does. This is not the ideal outcome. It is the best available one.

The appeal of this option is what it does not require. No infantry inserted into central Iran. No elite squads clearing galleries in close-quarters combat against a garrison waiting in the dark.........
