The Homework Was Finished

There are certain feelings we never entirely outgrow. The other night, just before turning off the bedside lamp, I kissed Aviva goodnight and said something that surprised even me. “I feel just like I did on a Sunday evening when I was a little boy.” Aviva looked at me with a smile that said: Tell me more! As a child, Sunday evenings were always a curious mixture of emotions. There was the familiar knot in my stomach that another school week was about to begin. Monday meant homework would be collected, lessons would resume, and another week of expectations waited just beyond the horizon. But there was another feeling, one I had almost forgotten. If my homework was finished, if my books were neatly packed into my schoolbag and everything was ready for the morning, I experienced something that words have difficulty describing. I felt… ready.

There was a quiet satisfaction in knowing I had done everything that had been asked of me. I actually looked forward to walking into the classroom the next morning, not because school itself was always exciting, but because there is a unique peace that comes from knowing you have prepared well.

Somewhere along the way, adulthood preserved one of those emotions and quietly stole the other. Most of us still know the Sunday evening anxiety. We worry about Monday’s meetings, unanswered emails, unfinished projects, responsibilities piling up before the week has even begun. But we........
