When the feed reaches the street first
Every crowd has a first message. Increasingly, it is not shouted. It is forwarded. Count what six weeks have produced. In early July, an investigation found roughly thirty paid Instagram advertisements in India promoting child sexual abuse material. On 29 July, a video from the Prime Minister’s Facebook page addressing students on the paper leak was restricted for several hours, and Meta’s chief global affairs officer flew to Delhi to apologise.
The next day, Hyderabad police registered two FIRs naming Meta’s India head over morphed posts targeting the Prime Minister, and the Telangana government transferred the officer who filed them. Four episodes, two parties in office, one structural fact. A ranking system that no Indian institution can inspect now decides what a crowd believes before the state has finished drafting a press release.
The anger behind this summer’s agitation was genuine. A paper leak is not manufactured outrage; it is the theft of years of work from young people who did everything asked of them. The right to gather and demand redress is a constitutional guarantee, and a healthy republic should expect eruptions rather than fear them. But between the grievance and the street, a second machine went to work, and it required no plot. Recommendation systems maximise attention, and a calibrated grievance outperforms a calm explanation. Footage of confrontation outperforms footage of negotiation.
A clip engineered to humiliate an institution travels further than the reasoned complaint beneath it, not because anyone chose that, but because the system was told to find whatever keeps a thumb from scrolling, and it obeyed. A New Mexico court found precisely this in August, ruling that features built to optimise engagement were themselves harmful. The platform, in other words, selects the most inflammatory expression of a movement and returns the anger to the people who produced it as proof that the country is on fire. And nothing follows.
If a newspaper prints a falsehood, a correction comes within a day, because editing has always carried responsibility. A platform that pushes a rumour to........
