READER’S VIEW: Albany must confront out-of-control Medicaid spending to protect taxpayers, state economy

I have been dismayed in recent months that some state leaders are blaming the federal government for the New York state Medicaid program’s woes, when they should be taking responsibility for their spending and how they have contributed to the problem.

Our state’s Medicaid program is out of control and has been for years.

It is estimated that 44% of all New Yorkers are on Medicaid, the second-highest participation rate in the U.S. behind California. Each state creates its own Medicaid program within federal guidelines, leading to variations in eligibility, covered services and provider payment rates across the country. New York’s program is one of the most generous.
