Q: I’m turning 31 this summer and I don’t have any big debt, this isn’t a crisis, but I just keep doing this thing where summer hits and my brain goes into treat-yourself mode. Patio after work on a Tuesday because why not? Parking right next to the beach instead of walking 10 minutes because it’s hot. Someone’s having people over and I show up with much more wine and snacks than the assignment called for. None of it feels like a big deal in the moment and it’s never one purchase that makes me wince. But every September I open my banking app and wonder why I owe so much. Apparently coasting through three months without thinking costs me money. Is there an actual way to enjoy summer without doing this to myself every year? ~Casey
