FBI Director Kash Patel is firing back against an explosive new report alleging that his alcohol-fueled lifestyle has compromised national security and left the agency in a state of paralysis. 

The report, published Friday by The Atlantic, paints a portrait of a leader unreachable during a crisis prompting a defiant response from Patel, who has threatened to sue the publication for “hit piece lies”.

Patel told the Atlantic: “Print it, all false, I’ll see you in court – bring your checkbook.”

On Saturday, Patel published an X post on his official FBI account addressed to what he called “the fake news” over “the hit piece lies you write about me”.

“Keep talking,” Patel wrote. “It means I’m doing exactly what I should be doing. And no amount of BS you write will ever deter this FBI from making America safe again and taking down the criminals you love.”

However, members of Patel’s security detail reportedly struggled to wake him on multiple occasions. Six sources claimed that high-level briefings and meetings were frequently rescheduled because Patel was incapacitated following nights of drinking. 

Officials expressed fear that Patel’s behaviour poses a "threat to public safety”, leaving the agency vulnerable in the event of a domestic terrorist attack. The drinking allegations add to the mounting list of grievances against the director.

Patel has previously been criticized for using government jets for personal trips, including watching his girlfriend perform at a wrestling match and attending a hockey game in Milan. 

A report from retired FBI agents last year claimed he is “in over his head” and lacks a fundamental understanding of complex intelligence programs. In response, spokesperson Karoline Leavitt dismissed the report, citing plummeting crime rates and describing Patel as a “critical player” in the administration's law-and-order agenda. 

Officials believe that Patel’s behavior has become a threat to public safety and are curious about what will happen next.
