Anthropic launches Claude Design: New AI tool sent Figma stock tumbling 7%: Here’s why

AI powerhouse Anthropic has officially entered the professional design space with the launch of Claude Design, a groundbreaking generative design workbench.

Powered by the newly released Claude Opus 4.7 model, the tool marks a significant strategic pivot for Anthropic as it moves from being a model provider to a direct competitor of software giants like Figma, Canva and Adobe.

Unlike static image generators, Claude Design allows users to build and edit multi-page pitch decks, interactive prototypes, and website drafts through natural language.

Users can refine designs using chat, inline annotations or AI-generated sliders to adjust layout and style.

The tool can ingest a company’s existing codebase and design files to automatically extract and apply brand-consistent design systems including fonts, colors and components.

The recent announcement sent shockwaves through Wall Street, with Figma’s stock dropping nearly 7% and Adobe seeing slight declines as investors weigh the threat of AI-native design tools.

Claude Design is part of a broader ecosystem that includes Claude Code and Claude Cowork (for office collaboration), aiming to own the entire product lifecycle from initial concept to final code delivery.

While early reviews from outlets like PC World praise the tool’s ability to compress design decision cycles, experts note it is currently a “research preview”.

High token consumption-potentially using 80% of a Pro limit in under 30 minutes-remains a hurdle for mass adoption.

For now, the tool is seen as a major disruptor for non-professional creators and high-frequency marketing demands, though its design to develop handoff features pose a long-term challenge to professional UI/UX platforms.

Nonetheless, the recent strategy reshapes the competitive landscape of the entire enterprise software market and enhances the deep integration of AI technology into business operations.

The collaboration of designers, managers and developers to learn enhanced AI tools will become a crucial workplace skill in the future.
