The new “STORM” radars are expected to enter service in the Navy by April 2029.
The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) developed the first operational US radar in 1938. The XAF was installed on the battleship USS New York (BB-34), making it the first US capital ship to be equipped with true duplex operation radar. It provided the United States Navy with a massive tactical advantage in the early days of World War II.
The NRL continues to work with industry partners to enhance radar capabilities, with the Office of Naval Research recently awarding a contract to RTX subsidiary Raytheon to develop advanced radar software for next-generation naval radars.
