Afghanistan's Stability?
The Taliban’s claim of “stability” collapses under international evidence. Since the 2021 takeover, the Afghan Taliban regime has not become a responsible state actor. It has converted state authority into an ideological project that shields TTP and other extremist networks; it drives isolation, weakens the economy, and shifts the cost onto Afghan households.
This can be conveniently termed a triple failure: legitimacy failure, security failure, and welfare failure. It is also widely believed that TTP sanctuary is an Afghan national-interest issue and not only Pakistan’s security concern. The UN Security Council Monitoring Team, in its latest findings, says Taliban claims (that no terrorist groups operate from Afghanistan) are “not credible”. It reports TTP attacks from Afghan soil, Taliban harbouring and facilitation of TTP operations, around 6,000 TTP fighters in Afghan provinces, leading to more than 600 attacks in Pakistan in 2025. The UN Security Council Monitoring Team also estimates that border closures linked to this crisis cost the Afghan economy about $1 million per day.
