The Peace Deal That Isn’t
The main implications of this Peace Deal are: one, while ensuring Israel’s military superiority and abiding hegemony, it seeks to unilaterally disarm and demobilise Hamas, thus giving the IDF overwhelming military superiority and advantage; two, it seeks to get Israel’s hostages back right at the outset, thus seriously undermining Hamas’ leverage to bargain from an advantageous position in later phases; three, “forever peace” remains as elusive as ever because the chances of a Palestinian state remain non-existent; and finally, it creates the environment for developing Gaza into a Riviera/special economic zone, as visualised by the President Trump–PM Netanyahu duo. Furthermore, the issue of Palestinian statehood has only been mentioned in passing, setting vague conditions for it to be considered at some distant, uncertain point in time when the Palestinian Authority would have reformed itself according to the as-yet unknown diktat, understanding or wishes of the US–Israel Combine. It is a patently impractical, unrealistic, undoable undertaking. Curiously, there is no mention or reference to Israel’s expansionist designs in the pursuit of its ideal of a Greater Israel. That impinges directly upon the territories of Palestine as well as other regional countries. Will Israeli settlements in the West Bank be stopped, reversed or be accepted as a fait accompli? Critically, there is no mention of any process to bring to justice all those guilty of glaring crimes against humanity, violations of international humanitarian law and gross war crimes!
