No progress was made in talks between the United States and Iran to end their military conflict, and the deadline for negotiations has passed. As the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz — a crucial artery for energy transport — continues, global economic turmoil is deepening.

Japan benefits from Middle Eastern oil and other resources, and enjoys good relations with countries in the region. To stabilize the strait, Japan should strengthen cooperation with these countries and strive to break the impasse.
