Waymo has expanded its self-driving vehicles into four more U.S. cities, the company announced on Tuesday.
The company is launching its fully autonomous Robotaxis in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Orlando, Florida. Select drivers who already have the Waymo app downloaded will receive invitations to use the ride-hailing service, while rides are set to be open to everyone later this year.
The company says its vehicles are safer than human drivers, stating its technology has led to 81% fewer injury-causing crashes, though they have been involved in crashes and have violated traffic laws. In November, San Francisco leaders rallied to create a legislation that puts checks on the autonomous Waymo vehicles after it killed a neighborhood cat.
Waymo’s chief safety officer, Mauricio Peña, testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on Feb. 4 and answered questions about its safety standards and the use of remote operators.
“17 years ago, Waymo started as a moonshot born out of a simple but radical idea that we could use technology to eliminate serious injury and deaths on the roads and make autonomous transportation accessible to people who are unable to drive themselves,” Peña said. “Our mission is to be the world’s most trusted driver and achieving that mission starts with safety.”
Peña said Waymo has a safety-first culture and that every software optic must be approved by its safety board before it reaches the roads. Peña also said the company provides 400,000 rides every week and has driven nearly 200 million fully autonomous miles on public roads.
“For us safety is not a competing priority. It is the foundation of every decision we make at Waymo,” Peña said at the Senate Commerce Committee meeting.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, currently operates in Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, and Austin, Texas.
