Iran bans sports teams from travel to ‘hostile countries’

Iran has banned its sports teams from participating in competitions held in countries it deems hostile, Iranian media reported Thursday. 

The ban announced by Iran’s Ministry of Sports in Tehran stated that “the presence of national and club teams in countries that are considered hostile and are unable to ensure the security of Iranian athletes and team members is prohibited until further notice.”

The announcement comes amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war with Iran that has deeply affected the region and left Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dead. Communities are facing rapid displacement, and strikes have resulted in numerous civilian deaths.
