Watch live: Schumer, Democrats rail against GOP-led SAVE America Act

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) will speak with reporters Wednesday morning to voice their opposition to the GOP-led Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.

The election reform bill, backed by President Trump, would require Americans to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote and to bring a valid ID when casting a ballot. It would also eliminate voting by mail without excuses such as illness or military duty.

Earlier this week, Schumer lashed out at the measure calling it, “one of the most despicable pieces of legislation I’ve come across in the many years I’ve been a legislator.”

The bill, passed last month in the House, has hit roadblocks in the Senate, which has engaged in a long and contentious debate. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on Tuesday threatened to attack Democrats in November if they failed to “get on board” with the SAVE America Act.

The press conference is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT.
