Watch live: House Democrats speak as DHS funding battle persists

House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) and Vice Chair Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) will speak with reporters Tuesday as negotiations over funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) remain stalled after a partial shutdown began over a month ago.

Despite President Trump’s ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Democrats have remained adamant about their demands for reforms to immigration enforcement. The funding lapse impacted not just immigration agencies, but also the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Coast Guard.

While legislation to reopen the department passed through the House, it has hit an impasse in the Senate. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Monday floated forcing a vote on funding for agencies not tied to Trump‘s deportation agenda.

Democrats have also balked at the president’s moves in the Middle East and pushed back on the GOP-backed Save America Act — which would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote and a valid photo ID for casting a ballot.
