Live updates: Trump’s Iran speech lands with a thud on financial markets

President Trump offered his first primetime remarks Wednesday night on the war in Iran, indicating that while it is going well, strikes will continue.

“Thanks to the progress we’ve made I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly,” Trump said. “We are going to hit them extremely hard. Over the next two to three weeks, we’re going to bring them back to the stone ages, where they belong.”

That message did not land softly Thursday on financial markets, which may have hoped for a more definitive path to ending the conflict.

The president’s approval rating has taken a tumble since the onset of the war in Iran.

Trump on Thursday will attend an intelligence briefing, sign an executive order and hold a policy meeting.

The National Capital Planning Commission will also vote Thursday afternoon on final approval for Trump’s White House ballroom addition, which he revealed this week includes a military complex. The vote comes just days after a federal judge temporarily paused construction.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, along with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will make an announcement at midday about microplastics.
