Conan O’Brien reflects on shock of Rob and Michele Reiner’s deaths

(NewsNation) —  Conan O’Brien, in an interview published days before he’s set to host the 98th Academy Awards, has opened up about the shocking deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner in December.

The Reiners had attended a holiday party at O’Brien’s home the night before they were found dead from apparent stab wounds in their home in Brentwood, Calif., on Dec. 14.

“Very simply, we had a party, we invited our really good friends and then, the next day, this terrible thing happened,” the comedian told The Hollywood Reporter.

When asked by the outlet how he and his wife had “processed their association” with the tragedy, O’Brien said he didn’t consider it any kind of “hardship.”

“Whatever difficulties my wife and I have experienced having our name attached to it are nothing compared to the scale of the tragedy for the family and the loss of Rob and Michele,” he continued.

The former late-night host added, “If you’re a known person, your name is going to get dragged into things sometimes, but it is not a hardship. There is only sadness that they’re gone.”

O’Brien noted that he didn’t address their deaths on his podcast because he felt it would be disrespectful.

He also told The New Yorker last month about his and his wife’s relationship with the Reiners, saying they saw them frequently and they were great people.

“And to have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone,” the comedian said, adding later, “I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward.”

Rob Reiner’s son Nick pleads not guilty

Rob and Michele Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, pleaded not guilty in the killings of his parents last month.

Reiner appeared with a shaved head in a brown jumpsuit beside public defender Kimberly Green, speaking only to waive his right to a speedy hearing.

A preliminary hearing is set for April 29. He has been held without bail since his arrest hours after his parents were found dead on Dec. 14.

A motive for the killings has not been established, but multiple reports indicate Nick Reiner also attended O’Brien’s Dec. 13 party, where he had allegedly argued with his father.
