Uber investing in EV maker Rivian for robotaxi launch

Uber is investing in the electric vehicle maker Rivian for a robotaxi launch, according to a Thursday press release.

Uber is set to make an investment with a ceiling of $1.25 billion in Rivian for the next five years, according to the release, in the aim of “a scaled, fully-autonomous fleet of Rivian R2 robotaxis, which will be available exclusively through the Uber platform.”

The release also said that $300 million has already been pledged to the project, if regulation allows.

“We’re big believers in Rivian’s approach—designing the vehicle, computer platform, and software stack together, while maintaining end-to-end control of scaled manufacturing and supply in the U.S.,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in the release.

“That vertical integration, combined with data from their growing consumer vehicle base and experience managing the complexities of commercial fleets, gives us conviction to set these ambitious but achievable targets.”

Last December, Uber began using robotaxis in Dallas. The company said at the time that customers there could access an Avride robotaxi, which it called “a brand-new way to ride with Uber.”

The Uber-Rivian partnership will result in thousands of the Rivian robotaxis driving in 25 European, American and Canadian cities by the end of 2031, according to the release.
