These Democrats are calling on Swalwell to leave Congress
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who on Sunday suspended his campaign for California’s governor amid sexual assault allegations he has denied, is now facing pressure from fellow congressional Democrats to leave his seat in Congress.
In a post on the social platform X, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-N.M.) said both Swalwell and Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), who earlier this year acknowledged an affair with a staffer who later died after lighting herself on fire, should exit Congress.
“[Rep. Tony] Gonzales [(R-Texas)] and Swalwell are not fit to serve in Congress given their sexual transgressions against women who work for them,” she said.
“They should resign or be expelled. There’s already been a resolution announced to expel Swalwell that I will support. I will introduce a resolution to expel Rep. Gonzales,” she added.
Neither Swalwell nor Gonzales has left Congress, though Gonzales abandoned his reelection effort. Swalwell is not running for reelection because of his gubernatorial bid.
On Sunday, Swalwell announced that he was suspending his campaign for Golden State governor, about two days after initial reports alleging that he had sexually assaulted a former staffer on multiple occasions.
A former staffer of Swalwell’s has alleged that the congressman sexually assaulted her twice when she was too intoxicated to give consent, the San Francisco Chronicle first reported. CNN also reported that three additional women had accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct.
“I am suspending my campaign for Governor,” Swalwell said on X Sunday. “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”
Swalwell’s fellow California Democrat, Rep. Jared Huffman, also slammed the embattled congressman on Saturday, saying “he must now drop out of the Governor’s race and resign from Congress.”
Washington state’s Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D) said on X Sunday that she was “sick and tired of men in positions of power getting away with sexual harassment, assault and abuse.”
“Representatives Gonzales and Swalwell should resign. Otherwise, I would vote to expel them,” the Evergreen State Democrat added.
New York Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D), in her own post on X pushing Swalwell to resign, said “Congress should not tolerate representatives who abuse staff, betray public trust for personal gain, and generally violate their oath of office.”
“Americans deserve better and Congress must hold our members accountable,” she added in her Monday morning post.
