Trump says he approves of Bolsonaro coming to US

President Trump on Tuesday said he approves of former Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro entering the U.S. after his runoff election loss to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva earlier this week.

“Well, I would approve,” Trump told reporters outside Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews. “I think they’re fine people. The election was very strange, and I thought it was terrible. It got bad reviews, and look what happened to their market.”

Trump added that he “didn’t take sides” and that he knows “Flávio a little bit” and Bolsonaro’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing leader compared to his U.S. counterpart as the “Trump of the tropics.”

Trump told reporters that he had heard the younger Bolsonaro was in Argentina. The candidate fled to Argentina and then Ecuador before the Trump administration granted Bolsonaro and his family with visas to enter the U.S.
