Mayorkas dodges endorsement of Becerra for California governor

Former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday dodged endorsing former Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra in the California governor’s race.

Mayorkas, who sat for an interview at Politico’s Security Summit in Washington, D.C., said, “I am agnostic with respect to the California gubernatorial race right now.”

“My residence is in Washington, D.C., you will not find me to answer your political questions in a satisfactory way,” he told Politico’s Alex Burns, later adding that there are “many qualified individuals in the California race,” including his former Biden administration colleague.

Mayorkas was born in Havana, Cuba, but grew up in Los Angeles.

Becerra’s star has risen after former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) ended his campaign last month. He has been seen as the Democrats’ top contender since Swalwell, the previous frontrunner, exited the race amid allegations of sexual assault.
