Early in-person voting begins in chaotic Wisconsin governor’s race

Wisconsin on Tuesday opened up early in-person voting for its primary elections, which include a chaotic five-way Democratic gubernatorial race and the party’s attempt to flip the state’s government to its control for the first time since 2010.

Party infighting could give state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, the edge in claiming the governor’s mansion, as she has received strong support among the party’s more liberal and progressive wing.

Hong will face off against former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, who narrowly lost her 2022 Senate race. Barnes is looking to receive Milwaukee’s support in his effort against the Madison-based Hong, with both cities being home to the largest numbers of Democratic voters in the Badger State.
