Stabenow backing Stevens in Democratic Michigan Senate primary

Former Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D) on Wednesday endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) in a hotly contested Democratic Senate primary in the state.

In a video that Stevens’s campaign posted online, Stabenow said it was “the honor of my lifetime to suit up every day and fight for Michigan” during her time in the Senate. She added that she is endorsing Stevens “because I know she’ll do the same thing.”

Stabenow, 76, represented the Wolverine State for four terms in the upper chamber before retiring in January 2025. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D) succeeded her in the Senate.

Stabenow said she and Stevens have been “partners” since the latter was on former President Obama’s task force on the auto industry — years before she entered Congress in 2019.

“Haley has the track record and the Michigan grit to lower costs and get things done for Michigan families,” Stabenow remarked. The retired lawmaker also said that Stevens “can beat” former Rep. Mike Rogers........
