New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) on Wednesday unveiled a one-year moratorium on AI use in public school classrooms through eighth grade, days before students return to school in the Big Apple.

The ban on generative AI applies to classrooms starting with care and learning for 2-year-olds and extends to the final year of middle school. Under the policy, public high schoolers in New York City will take two AI critical thinking classes during the 2026-27 school year.

A “small” number of high school classrooms, a maximum of five classes per school, will also have access to AI pilot platforms under the “direct supervision” of a teacher, Mamdani’s office noted in a release. The........
