Overlooking Asian American voters could cost Democrats the midterms

It’s no secret that with each election cycle, the costs become higher and the results become tighter. And every election cycle, pundits, party strategists, campaign operatives and consultants scramble to identify the coalition and the hot new silver bullet tactic that will carry Democrats over the finish line, bending over backwards to reinvent the wheel. 

Cycle after cycle, they overlook the fastest-growing community in the nation that is increasingly the margin of victory in key elections: Asian American voters. In battleground states including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, the total number of Asian Americans who cast ballots in 2020 and 2024 exceeded the presidential margin of victory in each state. 

With the 2026 midterms fast approaching, this continued oversight could prove catastrophic for Democrats and a critical opportunity for those willing to invest early and strategically.

In 2020, Asian American voters arguably delivered — or at minimum, helped secure — Biden’s victories in key swing states. Asian American voter turnout increased by nearly 62,000 voters between 2016 and 2020 in Georgia, where Biden carried the state by fewer than 12,000 votes. In Nevada, Asian American votes surged by 66 percent from 2016; in Arizona, by 58 percent, with both states decided by margins of tens of thousands of votes.
