Larry Summers resigns from Harvard amid investigation into Epstein ties
Former Harvard President Larry Summers is resigning from positions at the university due to his discovered ties with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Summers will leave his role as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government and will not take on new positions with the university.
“I have made the difficult decision to retire from my Harvard professorship at the end of this academic year,” Summers said in a statement.
“Free of formal responsibility, as President Emeritus and a retired professor, I look forward in time to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a range of global economic issues,” he added.
Summers, who served as Treasury secretary in former President Clinton’s administration and as the director of the National Economic Council under former President Obama, was under investigation by Harvard for his ties to Epstein.
It was found Summers asked for romantic advice from Epstein and made sexist comments toward women with him.
He previously apologized for his connections with Epstein and stepped down from teaching roles at Harvard last year, although he was still a tenured professor.
“In connection with the ongoing review by the University of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently released by the government, Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy Weinstein has accepted Professor Lawrence H. Summers’ resignation from his leadership position as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government,” said Jason Newton, a spokesperson for Harvard.
“Professor Summers has announced that he will retire from his academic and faculty appointments at Harvard at the end of this academic year and will remain on leave until that time,” he added.
