DOJ sues UCLA, alleging antisemitism

The Department of Justice (DOJ) sued the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Tuesday, accusing it of creating a hostile work environment for Jewish faculty, the latest instance of the Trump administration accusing colleges of failing to combat antisemitism during pro-Palestinian campus protests.

DOJ is going after UCLA for allegedly failing to uphold Title VII during the 2024 demonstrations, arguing Jewish faculty suffered a pattern of harassment without intervention from the school.

“Based on our investigation, UCLA administrators allegedly allowed virulent anti-Semitism to flourish on campus, harming students and staff alike,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “Today’s lawsuit underscores that this Department of Justice stands strong against hate and anti-Semitism in all its vile forms.”

The Hill has reached out to UCLA for comment.

The lawsuit alleges the university did not do enough as Jewish faculty were assaulted and had to see swastikas that were put on school buildings. The Trump administration says some Jewish faculty took leave, worked from home or even completely quit due to the work environment.

The university previously refused to agree to a $1 billion settlement the Trump administration sought to end federal investigations against it.

In addition, UCLA was able to win back some of the over $500 million the Trump administration took away in research funding last summer. It was one of the few schools that successfully challenged funding pauses implemented by the administration.
