German Chancellor Merz says US ‘being humiliated’ by Iran
Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday reportedly said Iran’s leadership is humiliating the United States in talks to end the war by getting President Trump to dispatch and then abruptly cancel travel by his top envoys.
“The Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather, very skilful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result,” Merz said during a talk to students in the town of Marsberg, Reuters reported.
“An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards. And so I hope that this ends as quickly as possible.”
Merz’s remarks demonstrate the anger and frustration in Europe over the more than two-month war, with Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz upending global energy supplies and impacting Europe particularly hard.
