AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three people are dead, including the alleged gunman, and at least 14 others are injured after a shooting at a popular bar on West Sixth Street in Austin, Texas, according to authorities. The FBI is now assisting in the investigation, which
Austin Police officers received calls before 2 a.m. about a man shooting at Buford’s Bar early Sunday morning.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a Sunday morning press conference that a large SUV had been seen driving around in the area prior to the shooting.
“At one point, [the driver] put his flashers on, rolled down his window, and began using a pistol, shooting out of his car windows, striking patrons of the bar that were on the patio and that were in front of the bar,” Davis explained.
The suspect then allegedly drove a short distance away before parking his vehicle, getting out, and opening fire at people walking by, she added. He continued walking away before encountering officers at an intersection.
“He was shot, and he was killed,” Davis said. The suspect has not yet been identified and the motive remains unclear.
Alex Doran, the acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio Field Office, suggested there may be a connection to terrorism.
“Obviously, it’s still way too early in the process to determine an exact motivation, but there were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” Doran said during a Sunday morning press conference before emphasizing the investigation remains ongoing. “Again, it’s still too early to make a determination on that.”
The FBI is working with Austin Police in the investigation.
Medics took 14 people to the hospital following the shooting. Of those, three were in critical condition as of early Sunday morning. Authorities have not provided any additional details about the victims, including the two people who were killed.
Chief Davis said officers and ATCEMS medics were able to respond quickly – within 57 seconds of receiving the call, according to ATCEMS Chief Robert Luckirtz – because of customary staging nearby. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed gratitude for their speed, saying there’s no “question that it saved lives.”
