US Census Bureau releases list of 1,000 most common first names in America

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Chances are there’s someone named Michael in your life. It’s the most common first name in the country, according to data just released by the U.S. Census Bureau. One out of every 100 people in the U.S. is named Michael.

The agency released the list of 1,000 most common first names, based on data collected during the 2020 Census.

A total of 3,476,721 Michaels were recorded across the country. John was the only other name to appear more than 3 million times. James, David and Robert round out the top five.

Mary is the most common female name on the list — but seventh overall.

Most names that appear on the list heavily favor one gender — 99.8% of Michaels are male and 99.8% of Marys are female, for example.........
